The Faculty of Military Medicine was founded on the base of the YSMU Chair of Medical Service Organization, Tactics and Extreme Medicine in 1994 by Resolution №223/19 of the RA Government. The Faculty has been headed by Col. (Ret.) S.S. Eghikyan (1994-1997), Maj. (Ret.) M.H. Tumanyan (1997-1998), Col. (Ret.) A.V. Ghazaryan (1998-2004) LTC D.S. Mkhitaryan (2004-present).
The distinguished officer-tutors, among them Col. (Ret.) A. Avagyan, T. Avetikyan, Col. (Ret.) L. Artishchev, LTC G. Sarkisova, LTC (Ret.) F. Muradyan, Cpt. (Ret.) K. Khachunts, associate professors (Ret.) E. Hakobyan, S. Khachatryan, under the supervision of the Head of the Faculty, Col. (Ret.) S.S. Eghikyan had their contribution to the organization of educational process at the Faculty. It was replenished by officer-tutors: Col. H. Hovhannisyan, LTC (Ret.) K. Saghyan, medical service Maj. (Ret.) A. Grigoryan, Maj. G. Vardanyan, Maj. K. Sargsyan. Most of them are the graduates of the Faculty of Military Medicine.
At first, the Faculty consisted of the 5th year students of the faculties of General Medicine, Pediatrics and Sanitation-Hygiene. The first enrollment to the Faculty was made in 1994. And in 2000 the Faculty had its first graduates.
Up to now, the Faculty has had more than 200 graduates, among them 20 got a diploma with honor. The Faculty has two nominal scholarships. Some of the graduates enter Clinical Residency and the best of them continue their education at St. Petersburg Academy of Military Medicine.
The majority of the Faculty graduates serve in the frontier as heads and doctors of medical service and military units. The Students' Parliament of the University includes Council of Military Students. The students of the Military Faculty participate in all arrangements held at the University. There is a memorial room at the Faculty, dedicated to the lost soldiers.
Since March of 2007 Military Medical Faculty started publishes the “Military Medicine” scientific magazine.
The work of the Faculty has been greatly improved for the last 10 years. New educational plans and programs have been worked out that correspond to the programs of St. Petersburg Academy of Military Medicine and other military medical institutions.
The clinical practical classes, probation period and annual camps of the students have become more organized and saturated.
Nowadays, the Faculty has three Chairs:
- Chair of Military Medicine Organization and Tactics. The head of the Chair is ad interim appointee Maj. G.R.Vardanyan. The Chair includes 3 courses:
- General Military Training,
- Military Epidemiology and Hygiene,
- Military Toxicology, Radiology and Medical Defense.
- Chair of Military Therapy. Since 1994 the Chair of Military Therapy has been a part of the Chair of Surgery, Therapy and Stomatology. Since 1998 it has worked as an independent Chair. It is headed by Col. S.G. Galstyan. The Chair is situated at the Central Clinical Military Hospital of the Defense Ministry of RA.
- Chair of Field Surgery was founded in 1994 on the base of the Central Military Hospital. Col. (Ret.) B.N. Harutunyan (1994-1997), Col.(Ret.) M.G. Margaryan, Cpt. (Ret.) M.H. Hovhannisyan (1999-2002) were heads of this Chair. Now Head of the Chair is Maj. A.K. Hovhannisyan.
Clinical Residency was established at the Chair in 2003 where 8 residents are being trained nowadays.
Simultaneously scientific activities are carried out in the Chair.
