Chair of Biochemistry
The chair of Biochemistry of the YSMU was founded at the 1924 as a chair of physiological chemistry at the Medical Faculty of the Yerevan State University by its rector-professor Hakob G. Ioannesyan. At 1930 this department was transferred to the newly founded Yerevan State Medical Institute as a chair of Biochemistry. From 1986 till now the head of the chair is M.I. Aghajanov, professor, active member of the Academy of Medical Sciences.
Education
There are 36 hours of lectures and 72 hours of practical classes at each faculties.
The practical lessons include the computer classes, experiments, discussions of the most difficult parts of Biochemistry and control of knowledge of the students too. Every day there are the consultations for the students. Since non all the themes are covered on the lecture hours, some themes are submitted for the self-dependent works of students. The opportunities are given them for studying the educational materials in home conditions at the Department and at the library. All necessary facilities are offered for the self-dependent distance education of students.
Twice in semester 2 test colloquiums are carried out. At the department the scientific works (referative and experimental) of students are carried out too.
The theses of the best student investigations are published at the special students transactions of the student scientific society.

Mechanisms of neurohormonal regulation in conditions of model neurodegeneration (Scientific supervisor – Head of department, professor M.I. Aghajanov)
Biochemical mechanisms of altered sensitivity to opyoid agonists at the diabetes melitus (Scientific supervisor – professor G.S. Vardanyan).
